If you are looking to replace a key fob that has advanced features, such as remote engine start and trunk release, it's recommended to speak with a dealer. However, a locksmith may be able to complete the task for less.

Dead Battery

One of the most common reasons for a key fob's device to stop working is due to an unresponsive battery. This issue can occur anytime, and often when you are least expecting it and your car needs to be on the road to work. It's not that difficult to repair a dead battery on a key fob, but you will need some basic knowledge about how these devices operate and the tools required to open them.

It isn't always easy to determine if a battery is dead in a modern key fob because most don't feature an LED light that is visible when the device is turned on. If you notice any errors or issues with your key fob it's the best method to determine if it's dead or low.

If you notice your key fob taking longer and longer to unlock or lock, it is an indication that the battery has drained. This could also cause a delay when starting your vehicle, which is an inconvenience.

You may also notice that your key fob's range is less than normal. This indicates that your battery is failing and no longer sending strong signals to your car's sensor.

Some modern key fobs come with the capability of releasing the physical key within them if the remote is lost. The key is usually located inside the fob, and you'll need to refer to the owner's manual to find specific details regarding how to locate it. If your vehicle has this feature, you should always keep an additional key fob in the glovebox or in the center console.

You can replace the key fob's battery yourself by following the instructions provided in your vehicle owner's manual or on YouTube. These batteries cost around $10 or less at hardware stores and big-box retail outlets and online. It shouldn't be expensive to do this simple repair. Install the new battery in the same way as you removed the old one, or it won't work properly.

Stuck Buttons

As with all electronic devices, car keys will eventually cease to function. This is due to the natural buildup of dirt, oil, and other contaminants on our hands and in the air. In most cases it's a simple fix you can do yourself. Most of the time, a little cleaning with some ruby alcohol and a few clicks is all it takes.

Make sure that your device is unplugged. Use a cotton swab or some rubbing alcohol to scrub the button as well as the space surrounding it. Try to go as deep into the crevices as possible. After cleaning the buttons and surrounding areas, give them a couple of clicks to help remove any dirt that has accumulated.

Then, you'll need to use a can of compressed air to blow out any remaining gunk. Be careful not to blow dirt into the key fob itself though. You can try using small containers of compressed air similar to the kind you find in your cleaning products. This is enough to unblock the stuck button.

If you have tried all the above, but the buttons are not responding, it might be time to talk to an expert. In addition to having an extra key fob, you should make sure that you have all the required tools in your arsenal. These tools include a screwdriver, a pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers, as well as a key. The tools will allow you to access the circuit board inside, and remove the existing key fob without damaging or rendering it unusable.

Once you've gathered all of your tools, it's now time to begin the process of reprogramming. Typically you'll begin by getting into your vehicle on the driver's side and closing all the doors, excluding the driver's. You should also close any other electronic fobs that you'd like to program. Press the lock button a few times on the desired keyfob. This will cause an "lock sound" and signal that you've entered programming mode.
